How to cut tiles without chipping?

All do-it-yourselfer and tilers know it... Cutting tiles is a delicate art that requires a lot of application and the right tools. You must also choose the right method and better quality tiles to avoid chips and breakage during the work. Here is a little reminder on cutting tiles.

Steps to cleanly cut thin tiles

First of all, know that the manual method is to be preferred when you have to cut thin tiles to dress a small surface. Take a manual tile cutter or parrot pliers and cut your tiles along the cutting lines previously marked with a pencil and a ruler to obtain a clean cut, without breakage.
The manual tile cutter is precisely effective for cutting a tile that does not exceed 10 mm in thickness. It is very easy to handle, since all you have to do is scratch the tile with its wheel, place the cutting guide at the end of its travel and lower the handle to make an impeccable cut.
The parrot nipper can also do the trick if there are not many tiles to be cut. It is normally made up of a wheel and a jaw, and it tends to cut the tile right next to the scratch, or even make a rounded cut.

Procedures for cutting thick tiles cleanly

If, on the other hand, you plan to cut thick tiles or tile a spacious room, you should go electric. Not only is this the most effective method, but it avoids exhausting you and deceiving you.
The electric tile cutter is perfect for making a longitudinal straight cut and a bevel cut. Only, you must master its handling to avoid flying shards.
The angle grinder is also preferred by some professionals for cutting tiles cleanly. Just fit it with a continuous segment diamond blade, start it up and carefully follow the cutting line, and voilà, you're done.
For these electrical devices, however, it should be noted that there is no need to apply strong pressure when making the cut, even if it is a question of dealing with thick tiles. In fact, you're better off doing multiple passes being very careful with your hands.
Like the electric tile cutter, finally note that the angle grinder allows you to make rounded cuts. Thus, you can therefore use it to allow the passage of a pipe or other element of plumbing, electricity, carpentry, etc.
