Become a painter, plasterer or tiler-mosaicist

-Hello and welcome to this webinar dedicated to the profession of painter, plasterer and mosaic tiler. I am Ludovic, I am a fellow plasterer and I will accompany you throughout this webinar. The webinar will be in two parts, a first part dedicated to the presentation of trades and testimonials from young people who will join us subsequently and the last ten minutes will be reserved to answer your questions, so do not hesitate to ask. questions in the chat and also do not hesitate to vote for questions that you think are relevant which will be selected at the end. We start immediately by talking about the profession of painter. We're going to welcome Pauline. Pauline, hello, who is a companion painter and trainer at the center of the companions of duty. Pauline can you present us the profession of painter in a few words please?

The painter's profession

-Already hello Ludovic, and then already to answer your question the painter profession is already the last profession to enter a site, knowing that the goal of our profession will be to protect and embellish a surface where a support . When I talk about protecting, it is mainly the preparation of the support such as coating or sanding a support and it is really a very important step in our profession because in the end we can put the most beautiful paint in the world , if behind our support is not clean, in the end we will not have anything uniform or pretty at the level of our finish. So that is already very important on this. And then suddenly, once we have protected, we have prepared the support we will be able to embellish it with just a finish. And suddenly we are going to talk very well about painting but we are also going to talk about coating as wall coverings, like wallpaper, like the canvas to be painted, but also the coating that suddenly for this time for floor coverings flexible therefore as well the linoleum or the carpet, the pvc floors. So we are really going to be able to touch everything, it is really very diverse on this and this is also the case for sites because we can really have different sites, including renovation, new, individual, restaurants , hotels that sort of thing. And at the same time, we can work very well inside but also outside, so with facelifts but also, it should be known, with thermal insulation from the outside. So our job is really going to be a job where we are going to be meticulous, to be really observant at the level of the support, of the type of preparation we are going to do, adapt precisely to working with a team because often the painter is not all alone, we will be several but also be quite creative because we will have all the aesthetic side that is important in our profession, playing with colors will harmonize materials, textures. All this is very important in terms of the final rendering in a room so that behind the customer can feel good in the room. -Okay, thank you Pauline. What are for you, in your opinion, the employment and career prospects for this profession? -So already we can start with qualified workers and then we can really go up little by little, we find ourselves precisely as a team leader, we can be quantity surveyor, we can be a site supervisor, we can precisely work in all that is decoration , and when I talk about decorating is going to do faux wood, faux marble or that sort of thing. And suddenly you can even be a business manager at the end of the day when you will be able to work on this aesthetic side and this customer advice. -And how is the course going with the companions of duty? What is the typical course for the profession of painter? -So, to begin with we will first have the CAP, the CAP painter coating applicator. So in college post we will be on a CAP in two years and on a post bac we will be on a CAP for 1 year and then we go on the Tour de France with precisely starting with the BP, then once we at the BP we will be able to do either a DEUST to be a works supervisor or we can make an additional mention to do everything that is false wood, false marble. -When you spoke earlier about job prospects, can a painter also set up a business, become a self-employed person, etc.? - Absolutely, he can be an entrepreneur, he can be a craftsman, he can just be a business manager and then in addition to that the company, depending on the type of site we want we can really adapt our business there- above. -There are several sectors of the profession? -That's it, in the sense that we can work very well in the renovation but also in the new as a result. -OK. Thanks Pauline! So suddenly I remind you that the list of training sites is available in the training catalog on our website

The profession of the platters

-That's it. Hello everyone, so here I am going to tell you about the plaster trades, it takes over the plasterer trades, plasterer. We are talking about trades but it is a bit of specialties. So the plasterer, the plaster trades, we intervene in the building, for the development of buildings. So concretely we arrive after the mason and there you have it, all the finishing touches, all the planning, the decoration and we leave the site to the painter or the tiler, that's it. What we are going to say plasterer is going to be a little more the traditional part of the job, so it will be the plastered brick partitions, the brick ceilings, the traditional plaster that we are going to apply on the wall and work on it. The job of drywaller so it's kind of the main activity of the job so it's going to be working with plasterboard, so that's all that surrounds us. Very often it can be in homes, in hospitals, in cinemas, so here it can be very technical and very simple things. The job of staffeur therefore it will be a little more the decorative part of the job. So it's going to be the moldings, the cornices, the rosettes and many other things. I think all of you already go to a museum or things like that and see a very decorated room and voila. So there is also something that is also very often grouped there is insulation, it can be sound insulation. For example, I was talking about cinemas, we're going to create partitions to isolate between two cinemas, if we hear the movie from the next room it's not very pleasant, that's part of it . Thermal insulation, so thermal insulation is in fact resumed, we will insulate buildings so that they consume a minimum of energy. So today when we talk about ecology, especially nowadays we are the trades in relation to that. To summarize very simply in fact, we intervene to make the buildings pleasant to live in and habitable. -OK. It also plays a little bit with the dimensioning of the rooms, I think there is a contribution. I don't know if you, based on your experience on the construction sites, if you had a little questioning about the sizing of the parts and all that, does he establish all that a little? -Yes, of course. After that we have a duty to advise in fact. If there is a client, we work with the architect, we meet with the architect or directly with the clients so that if they ask us for specific things we are able to respond in fact, simply. We can say that such and such a partition will go here to insulate, for example, for the fire, for the noise, all that. -Depending on the room to which the partition will be appropriate, there will be a technical difference. How many kinds is a little bit of plaster? What differentiation is there and why do we have these differentiations? -Between the plasterboard? -Yes I do -Then there are classic plasterboards that we find very often, there are specialized fire plates which will be more effective against fires, acoustic plates which are treated to reduce noise, plates which are treated for humidity, to better resist humidity, we adapt to them according to the premises, according to the needs. -So, that's the plasterer who chooses when he should use all this? -That's it yeah, or so with the architect, very often it's the architect who tells us that here is the room is intended for that and we suddenly we will decide after what we are going enforce. -And at the very beginning you told us about the cost of more traditional plastering, what is the difference a little bit between plasterboard and traditional plastering? What are the advantages we will say of putting plaster in our homes today compared to plasterboard? -There are some advantages. So, for airtightness for example it can be an advantage that plaster makes buildings airtight. After that, there are certain advantages that are a little more technical but it is also a pleasure at work, personally I speak well personally, I like to do plaster, we really work with the material so it's very pleasant, that's it, it's a personal opinion. -Thank you Raphaël. What do you think the job prospects look like a little bit? What positions can a plasterer get at the end of his training with the journeymen? -Already the goal of training is to be a skilled worker, it is still the basis in fact when we seek to train I think, to know, to be competent in our profession. So after that can go very far, you can become a team leader, foreman, interior designer, after that requires some additional training, it is not just a CAP or a BP, it requires some more training .

-Conductor of work for those who do not know what it is, can you explain to us in two, three words? -So, it is the one who will in fact manage the site to do it very simply. He is in charge of the site, he will accompany him. -It's going to be the intermediary a little bit with the client and then he'll do the quotes and all that? -That's it exactly. -OK. Likewise, how does the training for the companions take place? At what age can one arrive at the companions' house to become a plasterer? Then what are the diplomas for this profession? -So we can start from 15 years old, if I don't say nonsense it's 15 years old. From there it's in two years if you leave college, if you don't have a diploma, it's in 1 year if you have a baccalaureate or a higher diploma and if you have a diploma in the trade you can go directly to the Tour de France to improve their skills. From that there is a CAP staffeur which is proposed and then it will be a BP, a professional certificate in plaster trades and after that we can go on a DEUST site supervisor and a building arts and crafts license. -So if I recap, a CAP in 2 years or 1 year depending on the status in which we arrive, 1 CAP for staffeur, a professional certificate in plaster trades and then license, finally DEUST and license for the conduct of work. -That's right, exactly. -So thank you Raphaël! -Thank you. - Immediately we are going to welcome Cindy who is going to talk to us about the job of tiler so Cindy you are responsible for the institute of the trades of the installation and the finish therefore plasterer, painter and tiler. Cindy can you tell us a little about the job of a tiler, please?

The profession of tiler

-Yes, hello Ludovic, hello everyone. So the job of tiler, finally tilers can work as well on large sites as for individuals on indoor supports so everything that is floors, walls, kitchen splashbacks, everything that is bathroom repair and then they can also work outdoors, more particularly for terraces. They lay tiles, earthenware, everything that is also creating mosaics depending on the site, I am thinking of everything that is sauna, hammam, laying of cement tiles also which is in the training but also of large format tiles which is current at the moment. Then the tiler is trained as well in the renovation as on new sites as well. It's a finishing job and that's it. -It works, thank you Cindy. In what area can you practice the profession of tiler? You told us about the new, renovations, what are the areas, the parts maybe? -Bah listen, in general a tiler is going to be more in all that is parts of water. I was saying this earlier, bathroom, everything that is toilets, base, splashback for kitchens, everything that ultimately receives water. But also I would like to add as for plasterers and painters, the tiler can become a qualified worker, team leader, work supervisor and company manager also among others, not necessarily but in any case in particular our tilers go towards these areas. -And suddenly, as for other trades, how is the training carried out with the companions of duty for a tiler? -So ditto, same diagram, a tiler who comes out of third and therefore post-college will come to us to train for a CAP and then for those who have a baccalaureate, he will train for a CAP in 1 year. For those who already have a CAP in the profession of tiler, they would be directly on the Tour de France as a prepa tout de France and will perfect themselves to become companions, this is the basis a little bit of what we do. When you arrive on the Tour de France, wish is the outcome of becoming a journeyman while validating diplomas: professional certificates, DEUST and professional licenses as well. -Thank you Cindy. Right away we will welcome Charlotte for a little testimony. Charlotte, you are currently in training with the companions of duty on the Tour de France, how would you describe your experience with the companions of duty since your arrival? -Hello, hello everyone. For me, the experience with the companions is really something enriching where we learn every day whether it is from adults even from the smallest that we in fact learn from everyone. After that what differentiates the companions is above all the motivation, here we are passionate about our job, we are not afraid to learn, to improve in this job, in what we do. There is also travel in fact, the companions will open doors for us to travel through France, discover new techniques, new ways of doing our job, but also across the world, we have the possibility of doing a little bit in the world. And the complicity also sometimes that we can have with our trainers or the people who surround us here is quite "fraternal", we are all there to help each other, there is not one who remains alone enough in done, so here we are quite often together, the principle of community. -You speak a little bit about the international, have you gone abroad or do you want to go international?

-No, I haven't had a chance to leave yet but yeah I would love to leave. At the moment with the conditions it's a bit complicated but I'm waiting, I would like to aim for Japan. It's a project to do but when you want you can do it so I believe in it. -What is for you the advantage of the companions of duty compared to other training centers according to you? What made you go to the companions of duty more than another training center? -Well in fact, for me when I arrived here I was immediately supervised but really well. I have always been really followed and for me that is what is important when we start a profession we need to be supported, we cannot start alone like that. And when I saw the motivation of the people I said “but I want to go!“, That's really what made me want, that one never leaves me aside, that one teaches you every day and that for me is important. -Thank you Charlotte! Immediately we will welcome Thibault who is a plasterer, who is also doing his training with the companions of duty. Thibault what do you like about your job? -So, hello Ludovic, hello everyone. What do I like about my job? It is a profession which is very diversified both in the fields of employment so as Raphaël said just before, we can use plasterboard, traditional plastering, insulation, staff, so we always have diversity in relation to that but also in the workplace, we are always on sites, we never work in the same place, we never do the same things several times so in fact there is always this diversity , there is never a routine that sets in and it's always a new adventure and suddenly that's what is good, when you are bored you never get bored! -Can you tell us about your background? So before arriving at the companions and then even your future prospects at the end of your training. -So my background, I was in high school before so I have a scientific baccalaureate, after I went to the companions so there I did a plasterer plasterer CAP, an ornamental staff CAP and then I am currently doing a BP , therefore in professional patent of plaster trades. I've been on the Tour de France for three years so I have visited the cities of Montbéliard, Bordeaux, Cagnes sur mer where I am currently. And if not my prospects for the future, therefore continue to train myself as much as possible when I have the opportunity and then potentially open a business to become a craftsman and then perhaps a business owner afterwards. -Thank you Thibault! -Thank you ! -We will continue with Cindy who is, as I said earlier, responsible for the plasterer, painters and mosaic tiler institute. Cindy can you brief us a little on the perspectives of these three professions within the companions of duty? -Yes then indeed we are currently working on setting up a heritage training course for plasterers where we will learn everything about plasterwork on stone, stairs on its resin, etc., so it's under construction. And then for painters, but in the future for all of our trades, for the trades where we are today, it is the establishment of a space design training which will include everything which is scenography, color technology, visual art, interior decoration and the advice that there is as Pauline said earlier. So we're going to dig deeper into all of this. And finally it is also, inevitably, to move a little more towards digital and everything related to the environment. -It works. What would you say to a young person who hesitates today or who does not yet know if he wants to join the companions of duty, what would you say to him today? -So I often say that from the moment we doubt, we have a doubt, it is that we necessarily want to go. A part where we want to go a part bah here we do not really know where we are going to set foot but from that moment I say to myself as much to take the step and not to regret thereafter because if we never say to ourselves later on well thin if I had known I would have trained in plastering, in painting, with companions or whatever, well here we might have regret not knowing what could have happened, So here is. I also like the quote where there is a will there is a way, so for me I think that says it all. -Thanks Cyndi. Immediately we will answer your questions that you asked in the chat. So let's start with the first question: what qualities do you need to be a tiler? So I'll let Cindy answer if you don't mind.-So not to be a tiler you have to be meticulous, you have to be really careful because the tiler will touch tools that are a little dangerous for everything that is traced and after you cut the material so suddenly you will have to be really careful. Yes, I would say that, meticulous, attentive and then creative too because the tiler will also be able to give a little bit of advice to clients afterwards, not necessarily directly in training. -Thank you Cindy! We continue with a second question, which will concern drywall plasterers: what qualities do you need to become a drywall plasterer? Raphaël if you will answer us. -So the qualities, you have to be precise, is something important, we are professions where we still work to the millimeter. There you go, precise, thorough, what else can I say? You shouldn't be afraid to work either because you are in a job that is not easy, you have to want to. It’s not very well said. - Minute, organized? -Here, also be very organized to save a little time. -Thank you Raphaël. So we continue with the questions, are these training courses accessible to women? Is it a drag to be a woman? So of course all training plasterers, painters, tilers and also all training with companions of duty are accessible to women. Is it a barrier to be a woman in the plasterer, painter or tiler solier model maker trades? To my knowledge, no, I will perhaps let Pauline talk about it, who will explain her experience to us. -And bah suddenly I would say absolutely not. It is not at all an obstacle to be a woman today in the building trades, as well the profession of painter, plasterer or even tiler, quite simply because today there are rules of measurement. security which means that in the end it is suitable but for everyone what so it is absolutely not a brake and on the contrary, more and more companies prefer to have women because suddenly we are going to be a lot more meticulous, that in any case it is the quality that stands out for many is that one is much more meticulous than a man. -Thank you Pauline. We continue, are there many hires at the end of these training courses? So you have to know that among the companions of duty if we go to the end of the Tour de France we will touch a lot of game. That is to say that in each region you will learn a different technique, a different aspect of your profession, for example if I take the job of plasterer in Strasbourg you will do a lot of traditional plastering, in the south perhaps a little more plasterboard and then in Brittany a little more staff and decoration. The fact of having made these three regions you will in fact discover the three facets of each of your trades and at the end therefore you will be able to select, here I am I am more interested in such part, more interested in such part. In fact you are going to be hired because you are going to have a panel of experience that will make you know exactly what you want to do next. So yes there is hiring at the end of these trades and especially for these trades three trades there, we are looking for a lot of plasterers, painters and tilers so do not hesitate it is a profession where there will be still hiring, there is no problem there. On job advertisements we often read the profession of painter and laying soft or hard floors, does painter training prepare for this market demand? Cindy perhaps for the profession of painter and soft floors? -Yes then it should be known that the painters precisely have in their training whether it is in CAP or in professional patent a stage, a module of flexible grounds indeed. Our painters will not become unparalleled soliers but here we are in any case to this coating. And it is precisely an option the solier can be a painter's option with us in any case.

-Thank you Cindy. We continue, what is the necessary experience to embark on these training courses? So I will take care of answering, on all the training the minimum required is to be 15 years old as Raphaël said at the beginning of the webinar, to be 15 years old, out of college, therefore out third, for an apprenticeship during in two years alternating six weeks in the company, two weeks at the training center. If you arrive at the end of high school so at the end of a baccalaureate, you will do an apprenticeship in one year, called post-baccalaureate status, six weeks in the company, two weeks at the center of training. And at the end of this experience, you will be able to go on the Tour de France to improve your skills in the profession you have chosen. A question for painters, do you do artistic projects like frescoes? We'll let Charlotte answer. -It happens in a company that we do it but this is not the main purpose of our job and afterwards generally we will rather do it when we are going to be in an internship so in the workshop, it is there where in fact will be able to "have a little fun" and precisely sometimes we have carte blanche and we choose the colors, we choose the design and this is where we can enjoy it and do what we like! -Okay, you were talking a little bit about the workshop, when do you go to the workshop when you are on the Tour de France? -If there is a workshop in our house, we can go on weekends and in the evening. Otherwise, we go there when we are in a current internship. -Okay, thank you Charlotte. It's all good for questions, thank you for watching this webinar. Sorry not to have been able to answer all the questions that were asked but we remain at your disposal in the chat, available on the page of the open days of the companions of duty and you will be able to discuss in more detail during the interview of pre-registration. You can now register. Thank you to you, you can follow the replay directly from Wednesday for this job, good end of the day to you and see you soon!
