Fall work in the house: tiling and mosaic

Fall is a great time to do home maintenance or renovations. If everyone is starting to reinforce the insulation in their rooms to prepare them for winter, you can take the opportunity to lay or redo your tiles and mosaic.

The essentials for laying tiles and mosaic

The installation of a tile or a mosaic generally requires the use of a few tools including: tiles, masonry ruler, braces, glue, drill, helical mixer, trowel, glue comb, rubber mallet and spirit level. Then, you will also need a tiler's bat, a tile cutter, a square, a workbench, a scribe, an angle grinder, a diamond disc special tiles, joints, a cleaning kit for tiles and skirting boards.

The steps to follow to lay tiles

To lay tiles, you need to take 5 important steps. You must first find the location of the first tile. Then you need to lay the first row of tiles and you need to make the cutouts. Finally, you must make the joints and you must install the baseboards. Here, it should be noted that the tiles must be laid on a clean, dry, level and smooth surface to guarantee good adhesion and aesthetics. So do not hesitate to make a leveling compound before you start if you notice the presence of hollows or bumps greater than 5 mm.

The steps to take to lay the mosaic

To lay mosaic, you must first apply glue with a spatula. Then, you must lightly scrape the surface of the glue with a notched trowel to have the fixing ridges. The next step is to lay the mosaic-side sheet on the glue-coated surface. After, you must remove the net on which your parts are fixed while making sure that they do not come off. To continue, you must lay the lowest plates and go up in height. Finish all the tesserae and prepare a cement grout that you will then spread on the plates using a rubber spatula. Finally, wait a few minutes so that the grout does not run any more and pass a wet sponge without pressing too much on the joints. It should be noted that the mosaics for the floor are more resistant than the mosaics for the walls. So, if you lay mosaic on your floor, you can apply the adhesive directly as soon as the leveling is finished.
